You can’t spell heart or start without art, and at Art Start, this year’s local charity for the CitySolve Urban Race NYC, art is created to change and make an impact on the hearts of many young, at-risk individuals who live in city shelters, on the streets, are involved in court cases, or surviving with parents in crisis.
Since 1991, Art Start has offered creative arts workshops in collaboration with local teaching artists and educators to give at-risk youths the start and confidence they need to overcome their barriers, pursue opportunities, and make contributions to society. By providing these creative arts workshops and using art and music projects, Art Start nurtures personal development and relationship building for children.
Well-known public figures such as Bill Cosby, Bruce Willis, Oprah Winfrey, and President Bill Clinton have applauded Art Start’s efforts and impacts on the youth of NYC. Art Start has been featured and nationally recognized in many programs and newspapers including the Oprah Winfrey Show, National Public Radio, New York Times, MSNBC and has received many awards include the President’s Service Award by President Bill Clinton, National Endowment Arts Award, and Non-Profiteer of the Year Awarded to Art Start Executive Director, Johanna De Los Santos.
