More than just a game…
On June 14th High Trek Adventure held its 3rd annual urban adventure race in fabulous New York City. We were stationed on the Lower East Side at Professor Thoms where the bar quickly swelled with nearly 200 participants! One urban adventure racer, Maryann Lienhard, stood out from the rest. Maryann is a native New Yorker, born in the Bronx, completed the New York City Marathon three times and recently turned 60!!!
Most people love their birthdays. (I know I do.) It’s a time to be with friends, indulge in wonderful food and receive presents. (It sounds like a good time to me.) Maryann, felt otherwise. She was not looking towards another birthday and needed something to take her mind off of it. That’s when she came across High Trek Adventure. Said Maryann, “I figured if nothing else it (High Trek Adventure) would take my mind off the dreaded party.”
Apparently we did more than just take her mind off her new age. We made her, and I quote, “glow!”
She said, “we’re fans of the Amazing Race and this was doubtlessly the closest we’ll ever get. It was so interesting to work together to figure out clues, make phone calls, map the route, and run/walk/jog all over the village. We never argued or got annoyed with each other. It was just plain fun. We were also delighted with how helpful and polite the other teams were. We sat in Professor Thom’s plotting our approach next year. We’re sure we can move up in the rankings. I’ve been talking about it ever since. See, I’m still afterglowing!”
High Trek Adventure is designed for fun, but many people, like Maryann, walk away with so much more.
The Three Wise Ducks placed 30th out of 80 enthusiastic teams! TWD also won the AARP Division (one team member must be 60 of age). We can’t wait to return and see how many notches Maryann moves up next year! We’ll bring the ice cream, you bring the cake! Happy belated birhtday.
