Almost two years ago I signed up for the national registry to be a possible bone marrow donor. This past August I received a call telling me that I was a preliminary match. I had a few hoops to jump through, mainly passing a physical and drawing blood to see if I was an exact match. After some viles of blood extracted, making sure I don’t have hepatitis, and going through a very thorough questionnaire I’ve been approved and able to donate!!! (As I write this blog, I’m in day 4 out of the 5 day process).

I’m proud of what I’m doing, but I’m not doing this to receive praise from my friends and family. At first, I didn’t want many people to even know what I’m doing because I didn’t want to come across as arrogant. I later changed my tune when a friend pointed out to me that I probably would be donating if it weren’t for someone telling me about this program. So I hope to inspire you and you can in turn to help save a life. I’d much rather hear, “I decided to sign up on the registry because Jason did” than, “Wow, Jason, you’re an amazing person!”

Attention San Franciscans! We’re partnering Tech Search Party to help raise money for the Alvarado Elementary School.

Here’s the skinny:

Who: YOU!

What: Tech Search Party is a scavenger hunt in San Francisco’s Noe Valley. Click here to register

When: Saturday, February 6th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm (after party at The Dubliner on 24^th Street and Church)

Where: Alvarado Elementary School – 625 Douglass Street, San Francisco, CA 94114

Why: F-U-N! You can win some pretty awesome prizes (from Geeknet, EA Games, and more) too! All of the money raised from this event goes directly toward improving the quality of computers at the school. That means ticket price is tax-deductible!

Ok, I’m in. What’s the damage?
The fee is $50 for a team of up to 4 and $75 for a team of up to 6.

Other details:
At 6:00 pm sharp participants will be meet at Alvarado Elementary School’s auditorium and be given a map with some clues to decipher. Solving those clues will lead you to various locations in Noe Valley. When you arrive at the mystery location, you’ll take a photo of the answer with your phone and email it back to an address provided at the beginning of the event. The first team to solve all clues is the winner.

Rules: Phone that can take a picture and send email. Be on time. Teams have to stick together and stay on foot. Bring a flashlight (or flashlight app). Charge up your phone batteries. Respect the neighborhood.

When you sign up by 11:59 pm PST on January 31st CitySolve Urban Race will donate $5 of your registration to Partners in Health. We chose Partners in Health because it has very low operating costs and thus is able to provide more of each dollar donated directly to those suffering in Haiti. Please do your part and donate, even if you don’t sign up for our races. This is a dire matter and needs your help immediately.

We are kicking off our 2010 national race series in style in fabulous Honolulu, Hawaii!!! Whoo Hoo!!!

The race will start and end at The Honolulu Academy of Arts. HAA is also the official charity of our inaugural Honolulu urban race. So grab your sunscreen and shades and get ready for the most exciting island race EVER!!!

Giving back to the local community is very important to all of us here at High Trek Adventure. In 2008 we helped raise over $5,000! We look forward to quadrupling that amount in 2009! Our goal is to help raise $20,000 to various local charities throughout the US.

Here are some great charities that focus on sports, running or adventure racing:

Shoe 4 Africa – Empowerment through sports & education, creating unique health initiatives, and promoting Aids awareness. Our cornerstone project; The Shoe4Africa children’s Hospital.This organization is run completely by volunteers, so 100% of your money goes to the cause.  Why donate? Shoe 4 Africa is run by actor Anthony Edwards of ER fame (Dr. Green).

Team in Training – Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Join the more than 30,000 runners, walkers, cyclists and triathletes who will participate in the world’s major marathons, triathlons and century rides this year on behalf of LLS. Why donate? You’re running anyway! This charity operates all over the US, so whether you’re in Philly, Atlanta, Dallas or LA you can find a group to train with!
